STEP Pumping Station
The proposed pumping station will be located at the termination of the deep tunnel sewer adjacent to the Al Wathba Independent Sewage Treatment Plants (ISTPs). ADSSC has obtained a reservation from the Abu Dhabi Municipality for a site that is approximately 4.7 hectares in size. This site will require development and the construction of most likely multiple large structures.
The design will comply with all applicable Abu Dhabi laws and regulations, with applicable local codes and ordinances, and with the other codes and international standards referenced herein. For the most part, the design will follow established ADSSC guidelines and standards. British codes and standards will primarily be utilized and will be supplemented where required with various United States standards. Building construction will follow the 2006 International Building Code.
Site development will consist of:
- Levelling and grading
- Paving
- Installation of utilities and a site drainage system
- Construction of site security wall
- Final site restoration and landscaping
Subsurface conditions at the site are anticipated to consist of approximately of overburden soils followed by a weak sedimentary rock formation. It is anticipated that the groundwater will be close to the existing ground surface and that artesian groundwater conditions could be encountered. Soils and groundwater are anticipated to be highly corrosive to concrete.
The construction will include a large and deep structure housing the pumping facilities. This will require an excavation support system (circular reinforced concrete diaphragm walls, secant pile wall, shotcrete and rock bolts, or a combination of one or more of these support systems), followed by inner structural concrete ring walls, intermediate slabs, and a base slab. The most appropriate form of excavation support system will be left up to the contractor and will be based on his construction preference.
The final facility will include structures/buildings to accommodate the following uses or functions:
- Tunnel pumping station (coarse trash rack, pumping system, odour control system and other support systems)
- Electrical and power generation facilities
- Operations and maintenance facilities (offices, control room and maintenance spaces)
- Standby power fuel storage and pumping
- Flow distribution facility
Below-grade structures will be designed as conventionally reinforced concrete structures. Above-grade building structures will be reinforced concrete framing with block wall infill. The structure will be founded either on a below grade building structure or on conventional shallow spread concrete foundation. The roof structure will be reinforced concrete slabs and beams bearing directly on the reinforced concrete frames. Where a full building enclosure is not required, a steel roof beams supported by steel columns with concrete filled metal deck roof canopy will be considered.
The architectural concept for the facility is to create a unified campus of buildings through the use of consistent architectural building materials and complementary colours that present an architectural image of quality, good design, and consistent with local, best practices. The architectural treatment will use durable, low-maintenance, corrosion-resistant construction materials and provide a functional and accessible facility that meets the needs of the occupants and equipment.
A new Pump Station will be constructed at Al Wathba, 28 Kilometers from Abu Dhabi Island. The contract for the Pumping Station will be procured early in 2009 and the Pumping Station will be online by the end of 2012.
